Massage for Long Term Pain Conditions

Helping you establish and achieve your goals

Massage can be helpful for many long term and complex conditions, ranging from rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, disorders of the bowel and cancer.

It's important to discuss your personal journey, reflecting on where you were, where you are now and where you want to be, and looking at how this can be achieved.

Massage is also an excellent tool to support mental health and provides time for you to achieve stillness and be in the moment.

Here are two recommended massage services. You can find out more about my approach by scrolling down.

Looking for something else?

If you are looking for a hands-on massage without stones, check out the Myofascial massage option.

Myofascial Massage

Lighter, considered touch using slow and holding techniques, focused on easing into the tissue. Techniques are guided by the body’s tension, gently resting on these areas to promote an unwinding effect.

  • Great introductory style if you are new to massage.

  • Techniques can be as focused, or as broad as needed.

  • Recommended either weekly, monthly or 6-weekly, depending on your symptoms and goals.

What to expect

The focus of massage is to create a safe environment, because it can be hard to put your body in someone else's hands and feel relaxed, especially if you're living with a complex condition and pain. This might also be the first time you've considered massage as a way to help you manage your symptoms, so there can be feelings of uncertainly. It’s hugely important during massage that you feel you can speak honestly and openly,  so you feel listened to and comfortable with the massage plan.

Massages will use a considered and listening touch, with an open dialogue during treatment, guided by your feedback to ensure the speed and pressure of movement is comfortable.

It’s also important to align expectations. Even if you have tried massage before and it didn’t work, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for it. Perhaps there is a need for exploration and giving it some time to take effect, because the body is complex. So reviewing and discussing progress in each session is valuable, to ensure the massage is effective.

Outcome focused

The aim of massage for complex conditions is wholly dependent on what is important to you, and the goals you would like to achieve together, which may be to reduce feelings of stiffness, stress, low mood and fatigue, as well as learning to pace, or exploring what the future can look like. The goals we discuss will be the centre point for our massage work and can be adapted as we explore.
